The City of Courtenay is considering traffic calming improvements on 1st Street between Menzies and Keeneland avenues and is looking for input from area residents.
Residents can view potential options and speak with project staff at an open house at Puntledge Park Elementary School on Thursday October 2, from 5 to 7 pm.
A short online survey is also available until October 21 at City of Courtenay.
Four intersections along 1st Street have been identified for possible upgrades:
Menzies Avenue and 1st Street
Woods Avenue and 1st Street
Lost Creek Lane and 1st Street by Puntledge Park
Keeneland Avenue and 1st Street
The initiative is part of Courtenay’s commitment to creating safer, quieter, and more livable neighbourhoods.
The work is guided by the City’s Traffic Calming Guide and Policy, adopted last fall in response to community concerns about speeding, noise, and safety in residential areas.
Earlier this year, residents along 1st Street submitted a formal request under the new policy.
After initial screening, an independent engineer collected data and prepared recommendations. Following consultation, those recommendations will be presented to Council later this year for consideration in the 2026 capital budget.
